"Dear humanity, we regret being alien bastards. We regret coming to Earth. And we most definitely regret that the Corps just blew up our raggedy-ass fleet! (Hoo-Rah!)" -- Sergeant Johnson

RPG: usually a one player game in which you take on the role of a central hero (or, occasionally, a villian) and follow the course of his or her life and meet new people (who frequently join your party), obtain items, battle monsters, level up, fight bosses, and ultimately save the world or accomplish some other great deed and get almost no recognition by the general public (they usually just say "fine weather" or "wanna buy this thing" or something like that, even after saving the world). (that is my definition)
MMORPG (Massive multiplayer online role playing game): usually a game with more than one player in which you take on the role of a hero or villian (which you usually customize by choosing a race, professions, name, color scheme, etc.) and do battle with monsters and other players in order to level up, show off your nerdyness and/or sheer awesomeness, and kick some serious @$$. Many cost monthly fees to play. Some have no storyline, but just menial quests that are done for the betterment of the community or to destroy it.
See? Differences.
