Well, Penny Arcade is hosting/has been hosting a charity that may interest you. It's called Child's Play. The premise is that most money donated to hospitals is used to purchase food and equipment or other unimportant things like that. What the money doesn't go to is to the actual kids, buying them games and toys to get their minds off their illness and providing a sort of momentary escape.
Child's Play has allowed hospitals to set up a wish list on Amazon.com where people can purchase these games and things for the hospitals (Gabe's explanation [see his post beneath Tycho's]).
